Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

While we focus the majority of our work on fairness within Blackpool in order to showcase as a fair town it was felt that achieving Fairtrade status supported the fairness commissions messages. Since 2014 we have led and supported a Fairtrade steering panel who have worked with partners, residents and organisations to achieve Fairtrade Town status.

In 2017 Blackpool achieved Fairtrade Town status – a huge achievement and success for the area. This isn’t the end though as the steering group look to increase the prevalence of Fairtrade products in the area, promoting the benefits, raising awareness and encouraging a Fairtrade ethos.

If you are passionate about Fairtrade and believe in ethically sourced produce here are a few things YOU can do to support Fairtrade…

  • Buy Fairtrade products whenever possible (even if you only buy one Fairtrade item a week – even if it is just a bar of chocolate – it all helps support farmers get a decent wage)
  • Encourage your friends and family to buy Fairtrade
  • Learn more about Fairtrade and the origins of unfairness in the global market by visiting the Fairtrade Foundation website.

You can also join the campaign and get involved in any of our events throughout the year by emailing any ideas or comments you have fairness@blackpool.gov.uk
